WHY WE EXIST

Anesthesia has advanced. Training hasn't always kept pace.

Veterinary anesthesia has undergone extraordinary advances over the past several decades. Research has transformed our understanding of physiology, pharmacology, monitoring, and patient safety. Yet a substantial gap persists between what we know about safe anesthesia and what is routinely implemented in clinical practice.

Despite established guidelines and a growing body of scientific evidence, recommended practices are not consistently adopted. Inadequate monitoring, inconsistent preparation, and variable recovery practices continue to expose patients to preventable risks. Too often, clinical decisions are shaped by habit and tradition rather than an understanding of physiology and evidence-based principles.

Thomson Veterinary Education was founded to help close this gap. Through structured, specialist-led education, we equip veterinary teams with the knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical tools needed to translate the latest evidence into everyday practice and establish more consistent standards of care.

What we know should shape what we do.

If we know better, we should do better.

OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Teaching the Why, Not Just the How.

Memorizing a protocol is easy. Understanding the principles behind a protocol, knowing how to adapt it to the needs of each patient, and making informed decisions when circumstances change are what separate memorization from clinical competence. That’s the kind of learning Thomson Veterinary Education aims to cultivate.

Clinical Reasoning

Understand the physiology behind anesthetic decisions, recognize developing problems, and adapt management to the needs of each patient.

Consistent Practices

Translate evidence-based recommendations into reliable routines for preparation, monitoring, communication, and recovery, reducing variation and preventable errors.

Shared Understanding

Anesthesia requires coordinated effort from the entire veterinary team. A shared foundation of knowledge and clear expectations improve communication, efficiency, and patient safety.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Dr. Alexander Thomson

DVM, DACVAA
Board-Certified Veterinary Anesthesiologist
ACVAA Founding Fellow in Pain Management
Founder, Thomson Veterinary Education

Dr. Alexander Thomson is a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist whose clinical, teaching, and leadership experience spans referral hospitals, general practices, and academic institutions across North America and Asia. He previously held medical director positions at veterinary hospitals in Hong Kong and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Thomson has been responsible for training veterinary teams with widely varying levels of anesthesia experience. That experience revealed the need for a structured, practical educational resource that could establish a common foundation of knowledge, develop clinical reasoning, and support consistent standards of care. Thomson Veterinary Education grew out of his desire to create the training resource he wished had been available when educating his own teams.

Today, Thomson Veterinary Education brings that approach to veterinary hospitals around the world through specialist-led training designed to help teams apply what they learn, work more effectively together, and improve patient safety.

OUR INDEPENDENCE
